Safe Harbor strives to make Northeast Arkansas a better place for self-identified transgender, bisexual, lesbian, gay, and questioning youth by providing confidential peer support, education, and safe social gatherings. Safe Harbor specializes in ages 25 and under; however, no one will be refused help regardless of age. In addition, we hope to work in cooperation with other Arkansas gay and lesbian groups, such as the ASU Gay-Straight Alliance and Arkansas Equality Network.
Safe Harbor has been planning and organizing the group for over six months, and is now entering the "roll out" phase, which means we are ready to receive referrals from local physicians and counselors. Every week, all the youth and young adults will be invited to attend a group session that will explore such topics as self-esteem and self-protection, online dating, dating relationships, and parental relationships. All youth/young adult meetings are held every Thursday at Dr. Casey's office (off Fisher St. in Jonesboro), and all individuals 25 years old and under are welcome and encouraged to attend, even if they have not been referred to Safe Harbor by anyone.
In addition to the group meetings, Safe Harbor will work with various organizations to assist clients with such needs as financial assistance, housing, medication, medical care, and HIV testing. Safe Harbor will also assist with one-on-one short-term counseling with clients, if needed, and provide a 24-hour informational hotline at (870) 932-6545.
Safe Harbor is a non-profit organization,* funded through private donors, which fund all of Safe Harbor's programs since there are no paid staff members.
